Halloween in Reno

November 1st, 2008
BOO EVERYONE!!! Hope you all had a good, scary and happy halloween..I DID!  It went like this…

Its my fifth day here in Reno/Sparks area…I am tellin you I will be all over the place in NO TIME! and I was,  my 4th grader has no school coz its Nevada day..YIPPEE!!  And grandma took him out for an activity workshop day. So, I am stuck with my Duk-duk (my two year old son, if you’re wondering what Duk-duk means, its the chammoro term for hermit crab, go figure :D…LOL!). Anyway, Duks and I went shopping at WalMart SUPERCENTER (Dang! its my first time to see and shop at WALMART SUPERCENTER…its HUGE!), we just came in about 3mins  and my Duks…I dont know what’s  problem but he wont let me go shopping, I put him in the shopping cart and he wont stay where kids should go in the shopping cart…he was SCREAMING!

So, I have to take him back in the car and get the stroller… (I hope this one works…yeah think?), alright, he sat in his stroller…here we go entering WalMart again….and he starts screaming and wanting to get out of his stroller…I was like…what’s wrong with you?  Then I realized after we turn towards the electronics section of the store, he calm down and stop screaming…it was all those HALLOWEEN decorations that scared him (oh geez!)…didn’t I look like a dummy..LOL!

Anyway, I didnt get to see the whole store..I have to be back there, Duks will not let me stroll around the store with him…everywhere we turn there are people in costume and he screams left and right, you think its funny huh? Try it with a two year old……I was going banana! (which by the way his favorite fruit, right now).  So we head back to the house but I decided to explore a little bit and went south instead of north…oh boy!….it was all new road for me, haven’t been there….all I know was to turn around and you know what? I cant turn around because its one way street and I have to go around two or three blocks before I can go back to the road I was at…I was a little scared but hey! I wont learn ’till I explore right?  So, I did…just following my instinct and try to run my sense of direction, yeah know? (Yes! I do have a sense of direction, my husband told me I dont).  Anyway, because of this exploring, I’ve discovered several places, like the Mall, Reno airport, oriental market and YES!!! a FILIPINO restaurant…YIPPEE!!  I was pretty ecstatic and proud of myself.

My adventure didn’t end there, so by the time we get home, it was around 6:30ish in the evening and my 9yr old was patiently waiting for me to go ‘trick or treatin’ at Riverwalk in downtown Reno…(oh gosh! am I ready to do this? I have to, it was on the flier he brought home from school, so I cant say no)…so I hurried to Ma’s computer and mapquest the place…here we go, exit on downtown Reno, go straight on eight street, left on virginia street and right on 2nd street…yeah…it sounds easy on paper.

Oh Men! with all the lights of the casinos left and right and the signs that says one way, I think I only made two rounds to get to the place I needed to be including finding a public parking because most of the parking are either metered or paid parking. Well, the parking fee is pretty reasonable, you can get a $3 parking for 4hrs and 12hrs parking for $9 (not too shabby!), you can probably go casino hopping in 12hrs in downtown Reno or less, because you’ll probably loose a lot of money…unless you are SO LUCKY…goodluck on that!

Anyway, my son had a good time, I felt like I fulfilled my mission …atleast, I didn’t disappoint him. I had a fabulous time walking with him and Mattie(his dog), I can go back there and go casino hoping with my hugz when he come up here on weekends, no not to gamble maybe just the penny slot machines…LOL! Just to have FREE cocktail.

But even casinos are hurting in this economic crisis that we are facing, the famous FITZGERALD Hotel and Casino is already closed and El Dorado are laying-off hundreds of worker and very few tourist.  Mostly, you’ll see ’homeless’ and ‘bombs’ on the street side…it wasn’t like this 2years ago or even last year.  It was sad….but that’s the reality of life.  The funny thing is they’re still in costume….maybe they’re not really ‘homeless’ after all, maybe that’s their costume (that’s what I told my 9yr old and he goes ‘how come they have an oily hair? looks like they haven’t showered for days? And I answered him ’its part of their costume’), I hope my son will not asked me to go back there on day time and see same people and still wearing the same clothes because he would know…I lied.

What a HALLOWEEN!  Atleast, I got something to blog about, yeah?
